Joining student organizations

The best way to meet people, prevent homesickness, and get involved is to join at least one club or organization within the first few weeks of beginning college. Look into getting involved with the campus newspaper, a literary magazine, political clubs, religious activities, hobbies such as astronomy, and much more. Whether you know lots of people at your school or absolutely no one, joining an organization will help you become more comfortable and familiar with your new surroundings. Getting involved also hones your leadership skills, increases your self-esteem, and makes you a more well-rounded student.

Most student organizations will be looking for new folks to join and will be recruiting during orientation. Take time to read the flyers posted in your residence hall, dining rooms, and other places on campus. Depending on the size of your campus, your college may offer many more organizations in which to participate.

This is a great time to try out new things and experiences. If you’ve always been interested in student government, give it a try. If you think you want to be a writer, join the campus news-paper. If you find that you don’t like something, don’t worry about it—it’s perfectly OK to go to one or two meetings and then decide against joining an organization.
