Deciding What’s Right:
Ethics for Daniels Scholars was written for the Daniels Fund as a public service
by the Denver-based National Endowment for Financial Education® (NEFE®);
Ted Beck, President and CEO; Brent A. Neiser, CFP, Director
of Collaborative Programs; and Mary J. Schultz, Project Manager
of Collaborative Programs.
NEFE is an independent nonprofit organization committed to
educating Americans about personal finance and empowering them
to make positive, sound decisions to reach their financial
goals. NEFE prides itself on the programs and publications
it provides to all constituents, but especially those targeted
to young people, who hold the promise of a stronger and healthier
society in their hands. The National Endowment for Financial
Education, NEFE, and the NEFE logo are federally registered
service marks of the National Endowment for Financial Education.

The Daniels Fund is the legacy of Bill Daniels. He loved America
and believed each of us has a duty to offer help and hope to
others. He established the Daniels Fund in 1997 to support
programs that encourage
personal responsibility and achievement. When Bill died in
2000, the bulk of his estate transferred to Daniels Fund, making
it the largest foundation in the Rocky Mountain Region. The
Fund concentrates on two areas:
College Scholarships – The Fund supports
an innovative college scholarship program, the Daniel Scholars.
Bill wanted
the program to identify students in Wyoming, Colorado, New
Mexico, and Utah, who show academic
promise, strength of character, leadership potential, and a
well-rounded personality, but who would never be able to go
to college without financial assistance, mentoring, and personal
support. Since 2000, the program has provided assistance to
thousands of young people.
Community Support – The Fund provides grants to programs
that help disadvantaged members of the community, including
the homeless, physically handicapped and elderly individuals,
and those suffering from substance abuse and mental handicaps.
Program areas eligible for grants through the Daniels Fund
fall under the categories of: Aging, Alcoholism & Substance
Abuse, Amateur Sports, Youth Development, Disabilities, Homeless & Disadvantaged,
and Education.

“People come in all different shapes, sizes and colors.
And what makes them special isn’t their physical appearance or
the clothes they wear. It’s their personal values, ideas, and the
way they choose to conduct their lives. If you don’t make an effort
to reach out and find those qualities in people, someone who could have
been a great friend or business relationship will be gone and out of
your life before they ever got a chance to enter it.”
